RISKS AND HONEST CONCERNS

  1. Solo founder risk. Building, selling, deploying, and supporting an enterprise product alone is extremely difficult. The #1 priority after initial traction should be finding a co-founder (ideally with enterprise sales experience in a regulated industry).

  2. Enterprise sales cycle. Regulated industries buy slowly. Law firms are conservative. 6-9 month sales cycles are normal. Cash flow management is critical. The open-source community play (Phase 1) generates inbound interest that can shorten sales cycles.

  3. Microsoft/Google/Anthropic risk. If Microsoft ships "sovereign AI agents" as a turnkey feature of Azure Government or Microsoft 365, the startup opportunity shrinks dramatically. Microsoft's Feb 2026 sovereign cloud announcement is an early signal. Mitigation: move fast, build vertical-specific depth (legal workflows, integrations) that horizontal platforms won't prioritize.

  4. "Self-hosted" may not be what enterprises actually want. Many enterprises say they want on-premise but actually want "data residency in my preferred region" (which sovereign cloud providers offer without the operational burden of self-hosting). Test this assumption aggressively in customer interviews.

  5. Open-source monetization is hard. The r/selfhosted and r/localllama communities love free tools. Converting community enthusiasm into enterprise revenue requires a sharp free/paid line. Enterprise features (SSO, RBAC, audit logging, SLA, compliance certifications) are the standard playbook but require significant engineering investment.
